The Fall of Dinamo Moscow

They lay in 14th, level on points with the relegation zone. This wouldn’t be much of a concern for the fans if this was the start of the season. But it isn’t. 18 games have been played. “We’ll be fine, we’ll gain some form” the fans tell each other, trying to breed confidence into their souls. They know they’re fighting a lost cause though. There is only so long they can convince themselves they’ll get out of this mess. Time is running out. The weeks pass by and so do the games. And yet, … [Read more...]

Aleksey Smertin – From Siberia to Chelsea and Back Again

Born in 1975, Aleksey Smertin is regarded as one of the most recognisable Russian footballers having played for both Lokomotiv and Dinamo Moscow in Russia, as well as spells abroad with Bordeaux and Chelsea. He is now a Deputy Executive Director for Dinamo Moscow. Father figure Smertin was born in Barnaul, Southern Siberia. Like many, his dream was being a footballer. But unlike a lot of aspiring footballers, it was his Dad that was the focal force in making Aleksey, and his brother … [Read more...]

RFPL Week 27: Betting Advice

Ben Clark (@Dinoben_): Bet One: €10 Anzhi - Zenit: Zenit to win with exactly 3 goals @5.5 at Bet365 The league’s worse defence vs the league’s top scorers. There’s bound to be goals in this game and, if you’ve been a viewer of Zenit all season, you’ll know that they don’t stop after one goal. Though Anji tend to be tighter at home, that should be taken with a pitch of salt. They’ve conceded four at home this season to Spartak, three to Dinamo and Lokomotiv - their only home clean sheet … [Read more...]

Witsel, Financial Fair Play and Transfers Explained by Zenit Boss

Speaking to the Russian news agency TASS, Zenit’s General Director  Maksim Mitrofanov admits the club turned down €16m bid from Stoke City for midfielder Axel Witsel. Stoke later went onto sign Giannelli Imbula for a club record fee of £18.3m. Witsel joined from Benfica in 2012 and has been ever-present in the Zenit side since his arrival. Football Leaks leaked Witsel's transfer details back in February, and they revealed that Zenit sent €40m to Portugal in exchange for the Belgian … [Read more...]

Russia’s Seven Best Winter Signings

Jonathan Mensah FROM Evian TO Anzhi Makhachkala It was no surprise to see Anzhi sign a central-defender in the winter window. After all, they do have the worse defence in the league. What is surprising is the calibre of player they have signed in Jonathan Mensah - not to be mistaken for John Mensah. Experience is what Anzhi need and that is what they have got in Mensah. 36 caps for Ghana includes appearances at both the 2010 and 2014 World Cup. He also played every minute of the Black … [Read more...]

RPL Week 20: Betting Advice

Ben Clark (@Dinoben_): Bet One: €5 Spartak - Amkar: Quincy Promes to score anytime @2.5 at Bet365  Leading the goalscoring charts with 10 goals, Promes is the leagues most lethal striker. He’s been the game deadlock in four of those games too, so starting slow isn’t a problem for the Holland international. He also scored two in the reverse fixture of this match. Though Spartak have been far from consistent this term, Promes continues to be a dangerous threat and with his expansive … [Read more...]

The New Era of Dinamo Moscow

Suleyman Kerimov’s money being ploughed into Anzhi Makhachkala in 2011 was meant to be the start of something new. The seemingly bottomless pit of euros being put into the club was meant to bring a new dawn of day to a team in the shadow of political and violent unrest. But nothing ever brewed and once funding was withdrawn, Anzhi lost their fame, reputation and players. The decision to cut their budget - which came during August - put all their biggest names on the market. Samuel Eto’o, … [Read more...]

Igor Akinfeev – Owner of Europe’s Most Unwanted Run

Igor Akinfeev. The name - dependant on how closely you have followed the Russian’s progress over the last ten years - will bring different memories. If you haven’t been following Russian football closely, let me give you an update on the “Football Manager legend” career. The keeper is CSKA’s third most capped player but at 29, there is plenty of time for Russia’s no.1 to claim top spot. He has won five league titles, six Russian Cup’s and six Super Cup’s. He was also essential in CSKA’s UEFA … [Read more...]

Preview: FC Krasnodar – Dortmund

With two rounds left of the Europa League group stage, the match between FC Krasnodar and Dortmund could very well decide which team will end up as the winners of Group C. Dortmund won the first match 2-1, despite Krasnodar getting an early lead, but with the Germans only having a three point lead down to Krasnodar, everything is open if the Bulls manage to get the three points. In collaboration with Stefan Buczko (@BVBAwesome) Yellow Wall Pod, we give you the preview for this important … [Read more...]
