Reactions from RFPL Week 20

Lokomotiv and Spartak came away from the Moscow derby with a point apiece in a low-scoring weekend in the Russian Premier League. Spartak’s draw meant that the chasing pack could close the gap on the leaders and both CSKA and Zenit obliged with wins over Terek Grozny and Arsenal Tula respectively. The shock result of the weekend saw lowly Tom Tomsk beat Amkar to reignite their hopes of avoiding the drop. Lokomotiv Moscow – Spartak Moscow 1-1 Goals either side of half time saw Lokomotiv … [Read more...]

Reactions From RFPL Week 18

The Russian Football Premier League returned this weekend following the winter-enforced break and none of the top four sides recorded a win. Zenit and CSKA battled to a 0-0 draw on Saturday, meaning that Spartak had the opportunity to extend their five-point lead the top of the table against Krasnodar on Sunday. The leaders were held to a 2-2 draw and so the weekend’s big winners were Rostov, who thumped basement side Tom Tomsk 6-0 to move within a point of fourth spot. At the bottom of the … [Read more...]

Russian Reactions to the Europa League Games and Draw

Rostov - Sparta Prague (5-1 on agg) Rostov will face Manchester United in the Round of 16 of the Europa League after a comfortable aggregate victory over Sparta Prague. A resounding 4-0 victory in Russia meant that only a major collapse in Prague would prevent Ivan Daniliants’ side from progressing. Dmitriy Poloz fired Rostov ahead but the 10-man hosts equalised seven minutes from time via former CSKA Moscow defender Vyacheslav Karavaev. Head coach Daniliants was pleased by his side’s … [Read more...]

Reactions to the Europa League Draw

Monday's UEFA Europa League draw for the round of 32 saw three Russian sides learn their fate for February’s fixtures. Rostov were pitted against Sparta Praha, who made it clear that they are far from confident that they will defeat the Russian side. Krasnodar will face Fenerbahce, who are now managed by former Zenit and Russia boss Dick Advocaat. Zenit, hoping to build on their UEFA Cup win of 2008, were drawn against Belgian side Anderlecht. Reactions From Match Day 6 of European Football

This week’s European action saw Russian clubs play competitively for the last time before the winter break. In the Champions League, Rostov, ahead of PSV thanks to their historic win over Bayern, needed to avoid defeat in the Netherlands to reach the Europa League and they did just that. Leonid Slutsky bowed out as manager of CSKA with a 3-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, who progress to the Europa League at the expense of the Moscow side. In the Europa League, Krasnodar, already certain of their … [Read more...]

Reactions From Krasnodar’s Dramatic Victory Against Zenit

FC Krasnodar conceded late but hit back with two injury time goals to defeat Zenit St. Petersburg 2-1 in a remarkable end to the game. Artyom Dzyuba looked set to have snatched a win for the men from St Petersburg by firing home after a goalkeeping error in the 86th minute. The hosts refused to give up and equalised in the first minute of stoppage time when Marat Izmailov pounced on Dominic Criscito’s ponderous defending. In a moment befitting of winning any game, Tornike Okriashvili … [Read more...]

Reactions From Russia’s Great European Week

Earlier this week, the Russian clubs competing in Europe delivered one of the strongest overall performances in a long time. Led by Rostov's surprising victory against Bayern Munich, the four teams came away with two victories and two draws, putting Rostov and to a lesser degree CSKA in good positions to finish third in their Champions League groups, while both Zenit and Krasnodar booked tickets for the play-off rounds of the Europa League. Here are the reactions from the four games: Rostov – … [Read more...]

Robert Evdokimov and the Farce in Krasnodar

Krasnodar and Orenburg drew 3-3 in a game which provided brilliant entertainment both on and off the pitch. Jules Eboue was sent off for Krasnodar in the 44th minute, prompting a theatrical overreaction by the Ivorian. In the 73rd minute, Andrei Malykh saw red for Orenburg and, … [Read more...]

Reactions From RFPL Week 12

Spartak Moscow – CSKA Moscow 3-1 Spartak manager Massimo Carrera felt that his side’s finishing was the difference in the derby. “We took advantage of our chances. The opposition did not take their chances. But it is football: whoever scores, wins. I agree with the CSKA manager. Had the Armymen finished off their goalscoring chances, then we could have drawn with them. “I think that this victory is a credit to the whole team. The guys give everything on the pitch, they play with heart. They … [Read more...]
