European Group Stage Day 2: Round Up

This week saw four Russian sides compete on the European stage. English giants Liverpool and Manchester United were in Moscow for Champions League ties against Spartak and CSKA respectively. RFPL Round Three Review

  Three is the magic number in the Russian Football Premier League. After the third round, the triumvirate of Lokomotiv, and Akhmat are the only sides to have won all three games. Arsenal Tula - Spartak Moscow 3-0 Arsenal Tula pulled off a dramatic final-day escape with a 3-0 home victory over champions Spartak Moscow. The win, coupled with Krylia Sovetov’s loss to Terek Grozny, meant that Arsenal get to keep their Premier League status for at least a while longer. They will now face Yenisey in a promotion/relegation play-off on 25th and 28th May. Spartak Moscow - Zenit St Petersburg 2-1 Spartak Moscow have one hand on the Russian Premier League title after defeating rivals Zenit 2-1 a day after second-placed CSKA dropped points. The Muscovites are now ten points clear at the top thanks to goals from Quincy Promes and Aleksandr Samedov either side of an Artyom Dzyuba equaliser. Once again, the Russian Football Premier League delivered a weekend of drama. Leaders Spartak looked set to record their third draw in four games until Quincy Promes popped up with a winner in the fifth minute of injury time.
