The Grand Opening of Arena CSKA

Last weekend CSKA opened its new arena with a beautiful ceremony, which was unfortunately missed by many fans as they found out that the stadium is actually extremely well hidden. It is surrounded by a park and looks like some random office buildings, which makes it a perfect arena for the next Quidditch World Cup, as muggles won’t even notice it. Don’t try to meet your fellow supporters outside the arena if you don’t … [Read more...]

Photo Report: Muscovite Derby in the Russian Cup

I am a big fan of the Grassroots Project, where the photographer Sergey Novikov travels across Russia to take pictures of the most beautiful stadiums and most infamous amateur football teams. One does however not necessarily have to travel long distances to find interesting football venues. Not with a capital like Moscow, a city that has an incredible diversity regarding the beautiful game. The city has lot of both professional and amateur clubs with their own stadiums spread out around the huge … [Read more...]

First Football Scouting Course In Eastern Europe

It is no exaggeration to say that almost every football fan dreams about working in the professional football industry. Personally, I began to consider it for the first time when I played FIFA Manager 06. I knew this game was unrealistic in terms of determining the level and development of the players, but I enjoyed improving the financial standing of my club by selling more tickets, and merchandise. This passion indirectly influenced my choice of education, as I decided to study marketing and … [Read more...]

Report: FC Ural 2-1 Dynamo Moscow

Fyodor Smolov netted in a late goal at Geolog Stadium in Tyumen to give FC Ural their first win against Dynamo Moscow since 1993, and three more points in their race for survival in the Russian Premier League. "Fyodor is in good psychological and physical shape, and he has craftsmanship," noted Ural manager Alexander Tarkhanov. Smolov, on loan from Dynamo, has been playing the best season of his professional career. The forward created plenty of reason for unrest in the final third throughout … [Read more...]

An Englishman in Siberia: Winter Break Review of FC Tyumen

After four months of chilling wind, snow storms, frozen fingers, black ice on the roads and sheer boredom... IT'S BACK!! Football is back! Hallelujah! OK, the ice and snow are still largely here, but weekends now have meaning again. In England, I used to moan about waiting two months for the Premier League to start again, and even then there was usually an international tournament or two to keep me from panicking. The life of a Russian football fan, and a lower league one at that, is a whole … [Read more...]

My First Encounter with Russian Football

Exactly nine years ago, the 16th of November 2005, a few months after CSKA Moscow’s UEFA Cup victory brought Russian football back on the European football map, I had my first live experience with Russian football. The Danish U21 national team faced Russia in the final playoff match before the 2006 U21 EURO. I have seen many football matches around Europe since, but even today I often think about this particular one, and I believe it is one of the reasons why I today follow Russian football … [Read more...]

Diary of an Englishman in Siberia – October Review of FC Tyumen

Results FC Tyumen 4-1 Sibir Novosibirsk Shinnik Yaroslavl 2-0 FC Tyumen FC Tyumen 0-1 Anzhi Makhachkala Baltika 1-1 FC Tyumen You know the saying about waiting ages for a bus, then two come at once? Well this simply doesn't apply to Tyumen and victories; more like wait ages for a bus, then one will eventually come, but that's usually it for a while. On the other hand, it definitely does apply to the ridiculous weather - wait half a year for snow, then it all arrives at once. The … [Read more...]
