RFPL Round 15: Weighted Age Analytics

Fifteen rounds have passed in the Russian Football Premier League, and thus it’s time to look at weighted ages again.

Here’s a reminder of what’s the difference between squad weighted age and squad average age. Weighted age is a dynamic parameter that takes into account the actual usage of a player during the season: total minutes he played and the average age in the matches he played; this parameter changes with every match depending on the squad selection. The precise algorithm for calculation was outlined in our first feature, which can be found here.

Before we get to the actual profiles, let’s examine how weighted ages shifted in the last five rounds. Don’t forget that weighted age naturally increases during the season as the players get older; the only way to decrease weighted age is by fielding younger players.

  • FC Ural: -0.28 (27.86 -> 27.58)
  • FC Rostov: -0.12 (28.17 -> 28.05)
  • CSKA Moscow: -0.11 (28.43 -> 28.32)
  • Arsenal Tula: -0.03  (28.62 -> 28.59)
  • SKA Khabarovsk: -0.03 (29.00 -> 28.97)
  • Dinamo Moscow: -0.01 (27.87 -> 27.86)
  • Amkar Perm: +0.01 (28.19 -> 28.20)
  • Spartak Moscow: +0.02 (27.95 -> 27.97)
  • FC Krasnodar: +0.02 (27.44 -> 27.46)
  • FC Tosno: +0.03 (26.56 -> 26.59)
  • Akhmat Grozny:+0.03 (26.26 -> 26.29)
  • Zenit St. Petersburg: +0.04 (26.83 -> 26.88)
  • Lokomotiv Moscow: +0.05 (28.39 -> 29.44)
  • Rubin Kazan: +0.16  (28.40 -> 28.56)
  • FC Ufa: +0.28  (27.45 -> 27.73)
  • Anzhi Makhachkala: +0.31 (27.58 -> 27.89)

Most teams average weighted age stayed roughly the same since the last update in Round 10. Just six of the 16 teams average weighted age +/- changed by more than 0.10. For most of the teams within the 0.10 +/- this is a result of merely one or two changes to personnel, or the natural progression of age. Arsenal Tula’s dropped by a similar amount (0.03), due to simply finally introducing 23-year-old Evans Kangwa to the starting lineup in place of older players such as Ilya Maksimov, whereas Loko, Zenit, Akhmat et al all slightly rose due to relatively settled lineups.

Anzhi Makhachkala saw the most significant rise in the average weighted age of 0.31 over just five games, due to both natural ageing, having an already older squad and players such as Pavel Dolgov, Juan Lescano and Magomed Musalov seeing little game time. Ural’s average weighted age dropped relatively dramatically, once again the biggest drop in the division due to a continued influx of playing younger players such as Aleksei Evseev, Petrus Boumal and Yuri Bavin in place of now-departed Chisamba Lungu, Roman Emelyanov and Artem Fidler. The full team lists and profiles are as follows.
