U21 Euro Warm Up: What Happened to Russia’s 2013 Squad?

On Saturday, the 21st edition of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship kicks off in Poland. Unfortunately, the Russian national team fell short of expectations and failed to qualify, once again, and it has only played at three of the 13 tournaments held since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The last time it participated was in 2013, when the championship was hosted by Israel. Back then, the team coached by Nikolay Pisarev found itself in the Group of Death alongside Germany, … [Read more...]

5 Russians Who Could Move to Europe’s Top Leagues This Summer

After Russia reached the semi-finals of Euro 2008, it was only natural that many of their players were sought after by European clubs. By August of the following year, Andrei Arshavin, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and Yuri Zhirkov had all made their way over to the Premier League. Almost ten years have passed since that tournament, and since Arshavin’s four goals at Anfield, Russian players have had little to boast about in Europe. Currently, there are only two players in … [Read more...]

RFN Top 50 2016: 10-4

10: Denis Glushakov, Midfielder, Spartak (+31) Back in August nobody could possibly have predicted that Spartak would sit pretty at the top of the table going into the winter break, and even fewer could have foreseen Denis Glushakov’s meteoric rise up the RFN Top 50, but the midfield general has been a relatively unsung hero in Massimo Carrera’s machine. Without question the individual highlight was his sensational rocket that crashed in off his new teammate Aleksandr Selikhov’s crossbar in … [Read more...]

Slutsky’s Choice Part III: Midfielders

Moving on from the back line, in our third part of ‘Slutsky’s Choice’ we examine Russia’s midfield. Throughout the history of the national team, the midfield often possessed the most talented players. Following the days of the Soviet Union, Aleksandr Mostovoi, Andrei Kanchelskis, and Valeri Karpin functioned as the engine feeding strikers Igor Kolyvanov and Vladimir Beschastnykh. The modern midfield helped Russia qualify for a third straight tournament containing a deep pool of talented … [Read more...]

Army Men Back on Top After Defeating Kuban

A brace from striker Ahmed Musa gave CSKA a 2-0 win over Kuban Krasnodar and a return to the summit of the Russian Premier League. Musa netted from close range in the 20th minute and the Army Men finally put the game to rest when the Nigerian scored eight minutes from time, his 50th goal for CSKA. The hosts combined defensive solidity with sharp, attacking play to dominate a toothless Kuban side. Alan Dzagoev was the conductor of all things good and frustrating, while right-back Mario … [Read more...]

Season Preview: CSKA Moscow

Intro: Qualification for the promised land of Champions League football doesn't come much finer than on goal difference with two minutes of the entire season remaining, but thanks to Swedish holding midfielder Pontus Wernbloom's dramatic goal against Rostov, the Army Men just managed to pip Krasnodar to the second place available at Europe's top table. After a relatively fallow season for the capital's clubs with Spartak and Lokomotiv both hugely disappointing in the league, Torpedo getting … [Read more...]

5 Stars Who Could Leave Russia This Summer

1: Yura Movsisyan, Spartak Moscow The Armenian striker extended his contract with Spartak in April. His new contract made him one of Spartak's best paid players. Movsisyan’s 14/15 season was unfortunately ruined by injuries, which explains why he only found the back net two times. Movsisyan has earlier been linked with big clubs like the German cup winners Wolfsburg, and Liverpool, but after his disappointing season it is unlikely that these clubs are still interested. Movsisyan’s next … [Read more...]
