Brian Idowu – How Russia Lost a Promising Talent

At a time where more and more foreigners are naturalized to fill the spots on the Russian national team, and Russian youngsters struggle to earn playing time in the Russian Football Premier League, it is irony at its cruelest that the country could soon end up losing one of the few youngsters who has actually taken the difficult journey from talent to RFPL regular. The player is Amkar Perm’s defender Brian Idowu who has caught the eye of the Super Eagles. Idowu’s father is Nigerian while his … [Read more...]

Mid-Season Review: Amkar Perm

In the last five seasons, Amkar Perm have finished the season either in 10th or 11th place, proving that stability and survival has been in recent years the key mission for the club.  Amkar’s transfer policy over the past year also reflects a club with little financial resources at its disposal and a lot of restraints including many free transfers. Nevertheless, Amkar have had a great first half of the season and currently sit 6th after 17 games. They are unbeaten at home and are only one point … [Read more...]

Selikhov’s Move to Spartak Raises Concern

For Amkar Perm’s Aleksandr Selikhov, this season has been one long exam as the 22-year-old goalkeeper has been closely followed by scouts during every single game. The young man caught the attention of both Russian and foreign clubs when he broke through last season, establishing himself as one of the most promising and exciting prospects in the Russian Football Premier League (RFPL) of his age. Since then, he has regularly been linked with numerous clubs, including powerhouses Zenit St. … [Read more...]

Three Rounds Left – The fight to escape the RFPL drop

With three matches left to play, tension at the wrong end of the Russian Premier League has reached breaking point. If no team’s fate is sealed this mid-week, this coming weekend promises to be the most nerve wrenching affair with the bottom six all due to play one another. Five seasons back when the league underwent their restructuring to fall into line with the European season schedule (Autumn-Spring), the relegation playoffs were introduced to add an extra dimension to the domestic end of … [Read more...]

Georgi Peev Retires after Managerial Bust-Up

Russian football was this week shocked by the sudden announcement that Amkar Perm's legendary Bulgarian midfielder Georgi Peev was terminating his contract and retiring from football with immediate effect at the age of 37. Such an announcement, midway through a season, would in most cases be presumed to be related to injury, but in the case of Peev, a bust up with veteran manager Gadzhi Gadzhiev pushed him over the edge. Gadzhiev, who has been in charge of Amkar since 2015, and has managed at a … [Read more...]

Season Preview: Amkar Perm

Intro: Gadzhi Gadzhiyev, the man that worked together with Anatoliy Byshovets to take the Soviet Union Olympic football team to the gold medal back in 1988 in Seoul, embarked, last December, on an unbelievably complicated task at the helm of Amkar Perm, but so far he has been doing an impressive job. Amkar’s last season was full of ups and downs as the team failed to fully overcome the departure of the tactician Stanislav Cherchesov, who did a very good job with the team and implemented … [Read more...]

I take a look at Thursday's fixtures in the RPL, featuring Lokomotiv and Dynamo. Loko will be looking to continue their good form and will be full of confidence after beating Dynamo last week. Dynamo, on the other hand, need to start picking up wins if they want to be challenging for the European places come the end of the season. Amkar v Rostov These two teams come into this match with contrasting form. Amkar have lost just 1 of their last 5 games, whereas visitors Rostov have lost 3 of … [Read more...]
