RFPL 2017/2018 – Who Has the Best Kit?

SKA-Khabarovsk Premier Liga newcomers, like some other teams, decided not to bother and use last year's kits. They probably figured that nobody saw it last season anyway, as the coverage of the FNL is almost criminally low. The kit itself is nothing special, but there is nothing to criticize either. I personally like their massive badge, which looks appropriate on this empty T-shirt. FC Tosno The club from the Leningrad Oblast, founded in 2013, still hasn't built its own identity. … [Read more...]

Russian Transfers – Homeward Bound

Each year we read the same nonsense with Russian transfers. XXXX is on the way to an English or German club. It's a done deal. It's in the final stages. A month ago CSKA Moscow's Golovin was about to join Arsenal. That was June 10th. Three days later the same news outlet reported Arsenal's Russian scout, Pavel Kucherov, said He is not talented enough for the European level and it’s unrealistic to discuss his transfer to a top Premier League club. Fanboys and journos went into overdrive with a … [Read more...]

Season Preview: Arsenal Tula

The 2016-17 campaign was an utter disaster for FC Arsenal Tula and it was only saved by Igor Schevchenko’s goal in the second playoff relegation match against FC Yenisey at the end of May. Parting ways with experienced head coach Sergei Pavlov early on and for no understandable reasons proved to be an enormous mistake by the club’s board since his replacement, Sergei Kiryakov, didn’t bring anything new to the team, despite being given plenty of new players during the winter … [Read more...]

Former Belarus international Aleksandr Hleb made the news recently as he was announced as a new signing at Krylia Sovetov Samara. Now 35-years-old, this is his second spell at the club, having joined them in 2012 following his release from a disastrous spell at Barcelona. When Russian Football News’ Andrew Flint met Emmanuel Frimpong in Ekaterinburg in August following the Ghanaian’s debut for Arsenal Tula, Frimpong was optimistic about his future in Tula. After a couple of games, I can get fitter.” Those games never came though, and at the end of the year, Frimpong had just … [Read more...]

Mid-Season Review: Arsenal Tula

Tula, a city known for its metalworkers and for being the main centre of Russian samovar production, is also home to FC Arsenal Tula, who are currently second from bottom at the Premier League table. The 2016-17 campaign has been extremely complicated for the Tula outfit so far. Two different head-coaches, just two wins from seventeen league matches, the elimination from the Russian Cup and a long and never ending list of injured players since the first day of the season have undoubtedly … [Read more...]

Spartak Stun Arsenal Tula To Begin RPL 2016/17 Campaign – RFN Photo Reportage

Spartak Moscow 4-0 Arsenal Tula   Spartak began their 2016/17 RPL campaign with a stunning win over Arsenal Tula on Sunday. Two goals each from youngster Zhano Ananidze and then Quincy Promes gave "Myaso" a convincing win. Georgian maestro Ananidze was impressive throughout and took his two goals particularly well, notching his first with a cleverly curled shot in off the post to give Spartak the lead on six minutes. The 23-year-old's second of the game was even more spectacular, … [Read more...]

Five Things We Learned About Russian Football in March

1. Denisov's Lack of Respect for His Coach is Symptomatic of the Game If you look around the streets of average Russian cities nowadays, you don't see many 'pick-up' games, as Americans call it. These spontaneous kickabouts just for the love of playing are extremely rare, and this apathy is matched in the stands. Average attendances in the Premier League are hovering just over 10,000, boosted significantly by Zenit, Rubin Kazan and Spartak, and seeing Russian club shirts or memorabilia is … [Read more...]
