Mid-Season Review: Tom Tomsk

In the last 18 years, FC Tom Tomsk have been somewhat of a yo-yo club. Since 1998 they have resided within both Russia's top two divisions, achieving three promotions and also suffering two relegations.  Unfortunately for Tomsk, from what we have seen so far this season, it is currently looking like a 3rd relegation in as many years. The Siberian club are currently last in the RFPL with just nine points after the first 17 games. To make things even worse, Tom have just scored eight … [Read more...]

Mid-Season Review: FC Rostov

After finishing second last season, and focusing everything on qualifying for the Champions League group stage, it was natural that Rostov would struggle domestically this season. The extra European fixtures have clearly taken their toll on the small squad, explaining why they have lost games they probably wouldn’t have lost last season. Furthermore, listeners of the RFN Podcast will know that Rostov’s summer wasn’t quiet. Talismanic Head Coach Kurban Berdyev left the club to pursue a … [Read more...]

Mid-Season Review: Lokomotiv Moscow

The season began with some unexpected shocks. Head coach Igor Cherevchenko resigned before it was announced that club’s president Olga Smorodskaya and her team were leaving Lokomotiv. The most famous women in Russian football was replaced by Ilya Gerkus, former Zenit’s development director and ex–CEO of Liga–TV. Gerkus hired Igor Korneev, who also worked for Zenit, as sporting director, while Lokomotiv’s legendary coach Yuri Semin returned to the club for the fourth time to take over after … [Read more...]

Mid-Season Review: Zenit St. Petersburg

Zenit have actually done pretty well so far and currently sit in second going into the winter break. However, whilst this would not usually be too much of a panic, they are five points behind leaders Spartak Moscow which, with their form, could prove too much come the end of the campaign. Having said that, some new additions in January should give the Blue, White Navys the spark they need to push for that sixth top flight title. The Europa League has been a bright spot and the 2008 champions … [Read more...]

Mid-Season Review: Ural Ekaterinburg

Just like last season, Ural find themselves heading into the new year with a relatively new manager in charge, but this time round instead of sitting pretty in mid table safety they are in the relegation playoff zone. Once again a suspicious match against Terek has precipitated the acrimonious departure of a Belarusian head coach with Vadim Skripchenko hot-footing it to Samara to take over at Krylia Sovetov days after a humiliating 4-1 home defeat to the Chechens. Whereas Viktor Goncharenko left … [Read more...]

Mid-Season Review: Krylia Sovetov

Introduction There can be no doubt that Krylia Sovetov's only aim this season is mere survival in the Premier League. The campaign got off to a bad start and it seemed that, thanks to lack of investment from the board, no improvement had been made from last season and in fact, things had gone backwards with the loss of key players in the summer. Despite the fact that Franky Vercauteren was given no backing from the hierachy, he was solely blamed for the club's woeful start and was … [Read more...]
