RFPL Round 17: Results and Team of the Week

In what is arguably the most unpredictable and exciting RFPL season in years, results took somewhat of a turn towards normality in Round 17. Last week, only two of the top five recorded victories (Krasnodar and Spartak), here, four did. RFPL Round 16: Results and Team of the Week

Only two of the RFPL top six recorded victories today, as Spartak broke into the top five for the first time this season courtesy of an impressive 3-1 comeback victory over Ufa. Their inability to hold onto a lead has hampered them all season, having dropped fourteen points from winning positions this season. Last week was arguably one of the most boring rounds of Premier League action since the inception of the division in 1992. However, Round 15 returned with a bang as our newly appointed leaders at the top, Lokomotiv Moscow, destroyed title rivals Zenit St. Petersburg 3-0 at the Krestovsky, thanks to numerous sublime performances.   Three is the magic number in the Russian Football Premier League. After the third round, the triumvirate of Lokomotiv, and Akhmat are the only sides to have won all three games. At the flip side of the table, SKA, Tosno and Amkar have endured much slower starts to the season, with not a point to show between them. Spartak Moscow - Zenit St Petersburg 2-1 Spartak Moscow have one hand on the Russian Premier League title after defeating rivals Zenit 2-1 a day after second-placed CSKA dropped points. Lokomotiv and Spartak came away from the Moscow derby with a point apiece in a low-scoring weekend in the Russian Premier League. Spartak’s draw meant that the chasing pack could close the gap on the leaders and both CSKA and Zenit obliged with wins over Terek Grozny and Arsenal Tula respectively. Rostov - Sparta Prague (5-1 on agg) Rostov will face Manchester United in the Round of 16 of the Europa League after a comfortable aggregate victory over Sparta Prague. A resounding 4-0 victory in Russia meant that only a major collapse in Prague would prevent Ivan Daniliants’ side from progressing. Monday's UEFA Europa League draw for the round of 32 saw three Russian sides learn their fate for February’s fixtures. Rostov were pitted against Sparta Praha, who made it clear that they are far from confident that they will defeat the Russian side.
