Five-Star Zenit set the Standard It may be premature to race to conclusions in the Russian Premier League but Zenit St Petersburg and boss Roberto Mancini appear to be a good match. RFPL Round Three Review

Three is the magic number in the Russian Football Premier League. After the third round, the triumvirate of Lokomotiv, and Akhmat are the only sides to have won all three games. Mid-Season Review: Orenburg

Introduction A lot has changed in Orenburg in recent months, not least the change in official club name by dropping ‘Gazovik’ from their title after pressure from Vitaly Mutko, thus avoiding a conflict of interest with Zenit St. Petersburg, given fact that the main sponsor and owner of Orenburg is a Gazprom subsidiary.  A well-earned promotion from the FNL after just four seasons in Russia’s second tier was the least their utterly dominant performances deserved, and slowly but surely head … [Read more...]

An Englishman in Siberia: Winter Break Review of FC Tyumen

After four months of chilling wind, snow storms, frozen fingers, black ice on the roads and sheer boredom... IT'S BACK!! Football is back! Hallelujah! OK, the ice and snow are still largely here, but weekends now have meaning again. In England, I used to moan about waiting two months for the Premier League to start again, and even then there was usually an international tournament or two to keep me from panicking. Zenit St. Petersburg – A mid season review.

Judging by the photos on social media and the Zenit website, the training camp seems to be going well and this break in the Middle East will hopefully help Zenit clinch the Russian Championship. On paper they should also be expected … [Read more...]

Diary of an Englishman in Siberia – September Review of FC Tyumen

September in Tyumen is rubbish. Glorious late summer afternoons give way to miserable autumn mornings, or to be more precise, pre-winter. The roads around the city are being torn up in the annual rush to relay the hideously uneven surfaces before the deep freeze arrives (and these really are the best roads in Russia). This leaves the centre looking like a giant's playground with diggers strewn around the streets as traffic winds its way between the haphazard jungle of roadwork signs. Children … [Read more...]

Diary of an Englishman in Siberia: July Review of FC Tyumen

OK, maybe I can. But you all should be. I am almost certainly a little biased, but that might have something to do with the fact that the nearest team is further than Leeds to London. Welcome to the world of FC Tyumen. I must be honest, we … [Read more...]
