Europa League Preview: Rosenborg BK – Zenit St. Petersburg

Until recently Roberto Mancini had been totting up the wins in a relatively care-free fashion. His team sat happily atop of the Russian Football Premier League and boasted a perfect 100% win record in the Europa League group stage. Now, something no longer appears to add up; Zenit have failed to win in their last four domestic outings, and the latest 3-0 defeat saw the victors Lokomotiv Moscow emphatically dislodge Zenit from first place. The first game against Rosenborg BK came in the middle … [Read more...]

What Have We Learned From the First Third of the RFPL Season?

The first third of the Russian Football Premier League season has been predictably unpredictable. Spartak Moscow, the reigning champions of the league, sit in a disappointing 8th place. Massimo Carrera’s men have struggled to hold leads and pick up points against lesser sides, and this wastefulness has showed in their league standing. Meanwhile in Kazan, Kuban Berdyev has not yet been able to work his magic like he did in Rostov, with Rubin’s defense looking surprisingly porous at times. … [Read more...]

Giuliano: Zenit St Petersburg’s Ephemeral Star

Giuliano Victor de Paula’s presence came to grace St Petersburg briefly; after only one full season with Zenit, he has now been sold to Fenerbahçe in Turkey. Despite a highly successful year in Russia which saw the Brazilian’s market value increase almost twofold, he appears to have left for the same modest €7m he arrived for. Mircea Lucescu’s star player found himself not especially needed under Roberto Mancini, and the fact, not least the manner of his departure, undoubtedly leaves some fans … [Read more...]

Goodbye Dzyuba? How Driussi’s Arrival at Zenit Could Mean the End for the Big Man

An unexpected sting in the tail, tension, end to end entertainment and a late goal to secure victory; it is fair to say that Roberto Mancini’s home debut as Zenit Saint Petersburg manager on matchday two of the Russian Football Premier League did not disappoint. Despite falling behind just before half time to Kurban Berdyev’s Rubin Kazan - thanks in no small part to a poor piece of defending by Zenit’s Portuguese defender Luis Neto - the team from Piter turned it around with an injury time … [Read more...]

Season Preview: Zenit St. Petersburg

When André Villas-Boas left Zenit at the end of the 2015/16 season, he was replaced by the man who had turned Shakhtar Donetsk into the dominant force of Ukrainian football, Mircea Lucescu. The Romanian even managed to win a trophy in his first official match at the club, as his side beat CSKA Moscow in the Russian Super Cup. This, however, turned out to be the only silverware Zenit would win all season, as they crashed out of the Europa League in the Round of 32, missed out on Champions League … [Read more...]

Manolas and Driussi – Zenit Closing in on Significant Transfers

Roberto Mancini has now been Zenit St. Petersburg’s head coach for a few weeks, and he is starting to leave a mark on the squad. Over the previous weeks, the Blue-White-Sky Blues have already closed the signings of midfielder Christian Noboa and wingback Denis Terentiev from FC Rostov as well as midfielder Daler Kuzyaev from Akhmat Grozny. Although good players in the Russian Football Premier League, these transfers were, perhaps with the exception of Noboa who isone of the best midfielders … [Read more...]

Which Players Have a Future at Mancini’s Zenit?

For the second season in a row, Zenit St. Petersburg missed out on qualification to Europe’s finest club tournament, the Champions League. The disappointing results in the Russian Football Premier League cost head coach Mircea Lucescu his job, and he has been replaced by Roberto Mancini. The ambitious Italian has a history of being aggressive in the transfer market, proved by the fact that he during his time with Inter brought in players such as Luis Figo, Esteban Cambiasso, Walter Samuel and … [Read more...]

Roberto Mancini to Lead Russia?

Ever since Leonid Slutsky resigned as head coach of the Russian national team after a disastrous European Championship, several major names, both domestic and foreign, have entered the rumour mill. On Wednesday another name took the stage, as a source within the Russian Football Union (RFU) revealed that the RFU are considering the current Inter boss Roberto Mancini to lead Sbornaya. “The Russian football Union is considering Mancini’s candidacy to head the national football squad,” the source … [Read more...]
