A Closer Look at FC Ural’s New Man Aleksandr Lomakin

FC Ural’s head coach Aleksandr Tarkhanov is fully convinced that the team’s recent signing, Aleksandr Lomakin, will be of major importance for the Yekaterinburg outfit in the near future. During a short interview to FC Ural’s website, the experienced head coach remembered how hard it was to convince Lomakin’s former club, FC Yenisey, to release him and that the 21-year old midfielder has what is needed to help the team immediately. Lomakin was born in Moscow in 1995 and started playing … [Read more...]

The Grand Opening of Arena CSKA

Last weekend CSKA opened its new arena with a beautiful ceremony, which was unfortunately missed by many fans as they found out that the stadium is actually extremely well hidden. It is surrounded by a park and looks like some random office buildings, which makes it a perfect arena for the next Quidditch World Cup, as muggles won’t even notice it.   https://twitter.com/RusFootballNews/status/774640378280546304 Don’t try to meet your fellow supporters outside the arena if you don’t … [Read more...]

Spartak’s Ongoing Perestroika

“If what you have done yesterday still looks big to you, you haven't done much today.” - Mikhail Gorbachev The former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev paid too heavy a price for his Perestroika (перестройка), but it is an undeniable fact that the USSR had been on the verge of collapsing many years before his desperate attempts to restructure and reform that stagnated nation. Almost a quarter of a century after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, there is a Russian football club - Spartak … [Read more...]

Rubin Kazan – What’s Changed?

The last 12 months have been something of a rollercoaster for Rubin Kazan. Going into the 2014/15 season they weren’t fancied to do much, but under Rinat Bilyaletdinov, a heavily Russian and very young squad outshone all expectations and managed a very respectable 5th placed finish, qualifying for the Europa League after a one year hiatus courtesy of Dinamo Moscow’s Financial Fair Play infringements. Spirits were high in Kazan, and after only losing Cesar Navas from their first team squad to … [Read more...]

The Belarusian Samba – An Interview with Renan Bressan

Currently playing for the Portuguese side of Rio Ave FC, the Brazilian-born Belarusian international Renan Bressan is arguably one of the best footballers ever to have set foot in that Eastern European country. Being almost 27 now, the talented creative midfielder has been enjoying a good moment in Portuguese football, but he did not forget the glory days he spent at Belarus, the never ending nightmare he lived at Vladikavkaz and the brief stint in Kazakhstani football. Last week, the … [Read more...]

Season Preview: FC Krasnodar

Intro: We cannot dissociate FC Krasnodar’s recent successes with Oleg Kononov. The arrival of the Belarusian manager to the team back in 2013, to replace Slavoljub Muslin, marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Byki. Last season was fairly demanding, especially for a young team (they were only founded in 2008) such as FC Krasnodar, but the overall result was fairly satisfactory. The team finished the season in the 3rd place, with the same amount of points as CSKA Moscow (who were the … [Read more...]

Season Preview: Spartak Moscow

Intro: Last season turned out to be just another nail on Spartak Moscow’s already heavy perforated coffin. Murat Yakin, who took the team’s reins last summer, failed to fully implement his ideas in a team that has lost its guiding light a long time ago, and the result was yet another disastrous and underachieving campaign. Without European football once again, Spartak’s board parted ways with the former Swiss international and chose Dmitri Alenichev to lead the team’s adrift vessel this season. … [Read more...]

Season Preview: Amkar Perm

Intro: Gadzhi Gadzhiyev, the man that worked together with Anatoliy Byshovets to take the Soviet Union Olympic football team to the gold medal back in 1988 in Seoul, embarked, last December, on an unbelievably complicated task at the helm of Amkar Perm, but so far he has been doing an impressive job. Amkar’s last season was full of ups and downs as the team failed to fully overcome the departure of the tactician Stanislav Cherchesov, who did a very good job with the team and implemented … [Read more...]
