Roma – CSKA Preview

AS Roma end their four-year outcast from the UEFA Champions League when they return to action this Wednesday against Russian champions, CSKA Moscow. The Russian side have become a regular side in the Champions League in recent times, however success in the competition is limited in comparison to their success nearly a decade ago in the UEFA Cup. Leonid Slutsky takes his team to the Italian capital for game week one in an attempt to get out of the group which also involves English champions … [Read more...]

The Wrap: Sept 30 – Oct 7

BEST OF THE WEEK Rubin have had a fantastic week, with another comprehensive win in the Europa league, and then following it up with a 5-1 hammering of Anzhi. Berdyev's men are on the crest of a wave at the moment and all without main striker Salamon Rondon. Top stuff. Dynamo really dominated the game against CSKA, and Dan Petrescu will be delighted with his side's performance in this derby match, after disappointment against Loko a few weeks ago. WORST OF THE WEEK Kuban are really not … [Read more...]

Preview: CSKA v Viktoria Plzen

CSKA welcome Czech champions Viktoria Plzen in their first Champions League home match of the season... well sort of. CSKA will be playing this tie at Zenit's Petrovsky Stadium, as the other stadiums in Moscow are not untenable at the moment.  The Army Men will be hoping to put a recent slump behind them and win this vital match. CSKA have won just 1 in 5, and lost to lowly Terek at the weekend. There is no doubt that the pressure is on Slutsky, and he will be hoping to … [Read more...]

PREVIEW: Bayern v CSKA

CSKA travel to Bavaria to face the might of Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stages tonight.  CSKA were drawn into a group alongside big spenders Manchester City, Czech champions Viktoria Plzen and Tuesday's counterparts Bayern Munich. To have any chance of progressing, CSKA will feel as though they have to collect maximum points in both ties against Plzen and try to use home advantage to take points off the 'big boys'. However, this isn't to say that CSKA have no chance against … [Read more...]

CSKA – Young, Ambitious and Dangerous

I had the time and made my way yesterday to a youth game between CSKA Moscow and Krylia Sovetov Samara. The game was played the day prior to Monday's senior game, as has been regulated by the RFU and RFPL and was held at CSKA's smaller, 3000-seat Oktyabr Stadium. Despite an exciting RPL Sunday, featuring Rubin - Zenit and Ural - Spartak, I opted to dive into the rain and make my way to Oktyabr. My aim was to see a few players from CSKA's well-known academy, notably Dmitri Efremov and … [Read more...]

CSKA Moscow Season Preview

INTRO: The season after a title is always the more difficult, and I think CSKA obviously expect a more difficult season than the last one. They 'll have to manage the Champions League and the league. Moreover, CSKA may lose key players on the transfer market. It is already certain that Keisuke Honda will be no longer a CSKA player and he must be replaced. They must also consider the future of the central defence, who are aging a little. The sale of Uros Cosic to Pescara and the possible loan of … [Read more...]
