Problems with the Trans-Siberian Football League

The Russian Football National League (FNL) has been in place since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, unchanged from 1994 and remains one of the toughest logistical and fiscal challenges in world football. The Soviet Top Division and First Division were combined into the Russian Top Division in 1992, with the new Second Tier regionalised into a Centre, East and West. However, this model was scrapped in 1994 in favour of a 20-team single-region division we see today. The Russian Top Division … [Read more...]

Ural’s Great Escape

Pablo Fonatello probably deserved his long breath in the corridors of the Geolog Stadium just over a week ago. With a Terry Butcher-esque bandage still clinging to his forehead with genuine blood, sweat and tears, he slumped in the chair outside the changing rooms holding his young daughter having just put in an undisputed man-of-the-match performance to ensure Ural Ekaterinburg kept their place in the Russian Premier League. One would have forgiven him for having his mind elsewhere during the … [Read more...]

On the other hand, it definitely does apply to the ridiculous weather - wait half a year for snow, then it all arrives at once. The … [Read more...]

Vasily Karmazinenko's 28th minute goals for SKA-Energia Khabarovsk against Volga arrived just before 4.30am in the UK, and by the time the final whistle blew, British clocks were yet to strike six. Nevertheless, Volga were out of the Russian Cup. Karmazinenko grabbed a double was enough to see off the Nizhny Novgorod side 2-0, and before long they … [Read more...]
