The Third Annual RFN Awards

The Russian Football Premier League 2016/17 season is over. Like usual, it has been quite the ride, and both on and off the pitch, we have been entertained throughout the season. Now that it is over however, it is time to look back, and reward those who stood out from the rest. For the third year in a row, we do that with the RFN Awards, and we have found seven award winners, with six of them being positive.

Player of the Season

Dutch international Quincy Promes has been the stand out player this season. The striker has been in absolutely fantastic shape for Spartak, and had it not been for him, it is difficult to imagine the Red-Whites bringing home the trophy.

This is his third RFN Award. In the 2014/2015 season, he won the Signing of the Season award as well as the Young Player of the Season award.

For the second season in a row, Fedor Smolov wins the Russian Player of the Season award. The Krasnodar striker was the overall top scorer in the league, and there is no longer any doubt that he is one of the absolute best players in the country. Last season, Smolov also won the Best Signing of the Season award, making this his third RFN award.

Young Player of the Season

Not only is this Aleksei Miranchuk’s first RFN Award, it is also Lokomotiv Moscow’s first. 21-year-old Miranchuk has been fantastic this season, and by scoring in the cup final, the midfielder played a major role in the Red-Greens bringing home yet another major trophy. His good form even saw him included in Stanislav Cherchesov’s squad for the Confederations Cup.

Coach of the Season

There wasn’t really any competition for this award as all but one of our writers voted for the Italian. By winning the championship, he became an instant legend at Spartak, and no one can question the significance of what he has achieved in less than a season with the Red-Whites.

Best and Worst Signing of the Season

Best-Worst signing of the Season

By signing Fernando from Sampdoria, Spartak secured the best holding midfielder in the RFPL. The Brazilian has had a great season, and his hard work and tenacity has allowed creative players like Quincy Promes to shine up front. He is in the truest sense of the term the silent hero of the team.

Lacina Traoré on the other hand, was a disappointment from the beginning. Arriving last summer as the replacement for Seydou Doumbia and Ahmed Musa, big things were expected from the Ivorian target man. Unfortunately, Traoré was an obvious misfit, and although he did score a handful of goals, no one complained when his loan deal was terminated in January.

Team of the Season

For a record high third year in a row, Promes makes the Team of the Season. For Smolov and Navas, it is the second year in a row, while the rest are debutants. Considering how they have played this season however, they could all very well be in it next year as well.
