Introduction:
Moscow native and son of 1996 Olympic Games race walker silver medalist Mikhail Schennikov, Georgi Schennikov represents another of the CSKA stronghold in the national side. The 25-year-old left back has amassed just seven international caps for Sbornaya, which is the same number of CSKA players in the squad for the Euro 2016 tournament. He was, however, included in Russia’s 2014 World Cup squad in Brazil. He was also nominated for the Golden boy award - voted for by sports journalists annually to determine the best young player in Europe in a calendar year. He has won three Russian league titles, three Russian cups and two super cups during his time at CSKA.
Strengths and weaknesses:
Schennikov is a lanky left back who has an expert reading of the game. He is a hard tackler but can just as easily stand up and let players run at him. He is also particularly good at intercepting the ball.
While Schennikov is skilled in the defensive part of the game, his contribution in the offensive part can be criticized. He made just one assist in the 15/16 season, and averaged just 0.5 key passes per game according to InStat.
The 2015/26 Season:
Schennikov has made steady progress in the CSKA side since his breakthrough season in 2008, making an average of 27 games a season.
Last season he made 26, slightly below average, but in which he also picked up another league winner’s medal and was part of the side that made it to the Russian Cup Final in Kazan, although he was an unused substitute that day.
Schennikov is expected to travel to France as cover for first choice left-back, Spartak’s Dmitri Kombarov.
