The Belgian midfielder has attracted interest from Europe’s big clubs but, in an interview with Match TV, Witsel claims he could still stay at Zenit.
“I try not to open the newspapers but friends and relatives constantly call me and say something has been written about my future. It is fanastic if a big club is interested in me but right now I’m only thinking of Zenit and how to win the Russian championship.”
Hulk recently said that he had changed his mind thanks to Andre Villas Boas and is staying at Zenit. What is the probability you will change your mind?
“I haven’t closed the door on Zenit. Everybody is saying that I’m leaving but at the moment I’m not going to turn that page.”
This means that you might stay?
“It’s possible.”
With Witsel’s contract up in the summer of 2017 and the fact he is yet to sign a new deal means that he will more than likely leave this summer. Stoke City had a bid of around £16m rejected in January as Zenit looked to keep hold of the midfielder in order to secure the Russian Premier League title but will more than likely cash-in this summer in order to recoup some of the €40m they paid for him back in 2012. Whilst this interview has given Zenit fans some hope he will stay, it is more than likely that he is just trying to appease the club and its fans. The former Benfica man has expressed his desire to leave in several foreign newspapers and it remains unlikely that this desire has changed and ever will change.
